
Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens, March 18, 1970, in Newark. Latifah was the second daughter of Lance Owens and Rita Owens is well-known for her political activism and acting skills , as well as for her knack for rhyme. At the age of 8 old her Muslim cousin gave her the name Latifah, meaning "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah started singing with the choir at Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and had her first public performance in which she sang a version of "Home" as one of the two Dorothys in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's parochial school. Latifah was impressed by her mother, who was in constant contact with the choir and the students. She invited Mark James, a local disc jockey known as D.J. Mark the 45 King, was asked to sing at a school dance.
